food interview

I had an interesting chat with a male model in Paris yesterday. Here are the parts that dealt with food.

Me: It is commonly known that female models follow very strict diets, how is the situation with male models?

Him: I'd say it's not as bad as with the girls, but of course the ideal for men is also very thin. So everyone does watch what they eat and I am sure some of the guys do some pretty extreme things.

Me: How about you?

Him: Well, I'd say what I do is quite healthy, but I also model mostly for underwear, so I am heavier and more muscular than the guys who do mostly runway.

Me: So do you follow a certain regime?

Him: I try to eat protein with every meal, and I try to eat small meals regularly, like a banana with some cottage cheese or a protein shake. And of course I work out every second day.

Me: How do you do this when travelling?

Him: Hotel gym. I'm quite strict about that. I also do not drink any alcohol, but I can tell you, that's not very common amongst the guys here...

Model Workout

I talked to an impressively athletic young model yesterday (modelling for swimsuits and underwear, these models usually have more healthy looking bodies than your average runway skeleton). Here's her workout plan:

"Assuming I am at home, this is what an average week looks like:

I take three pilates classes a week, usually on tuesday, wednesday and friday because my favourite trainer does those classes.

Twice a week, I do weights. I have a plan were I train my legs and back on one day and my arms, shoulders and breast on the other day. I train my abs on both days, but do different excercises each time.

I do cardio four times a week, usually I run for 45 to 60 minutes twice a week and either bike for an hour or swim for an hour once a week. But cardio can vary, sometimes I bike or swim more often and run less.

I also enjoy dancing and occasionally take ballet classes, but this is not regular.

When I am travelling, I run outside and use the weight room at the hotel I am staying at."

Wow, impressive.

Diet Diary

I finally met someone (a 21-year old fashion model) willing to talk about her diet again...so here's the first diet-talk of the new year:

What doe your everyday diet look like?

Well, I try to eat as varied as possible, but I have to admit that I am not very good at this variety thing. I tend to stick to a number of foods at a time, then discover or re-discover something else after a while. I eat a lot of apples and oranges at the moment, and I love all kinds of vegetarian soups and porridge in the winter. I also drink a lot of coffee with hot milk, well, it's actually hot milk with a little bit of coffee, so I make sure I use low fat.

I like most vegetables but don't each them often enough, at the moment my favourite is spinach because I can simply defrost it in the microwave. I am often too lazy to cook a proper meal, and as I am often travelling, it's just not possible most of the time.

What do you usually order when you eat out?

I usually order fish. I really like fish and it is something I would never prepare myself at home, unlike soup for example. So I treat myself to fish at restaurants. I also drink white wine most of the time I eat out.

Do you do anything special when you prepare for an important job or event?

I work out more for about two weeks and eat less carbs the last few days before an event. It would have to something big though, or a shoot in underwear or swimwear, which I don't do often anyway...not enough boobs, haha.

How much to you work out and what do you do?

I try to work out at least three times a week, and usually do an hour of cardio and half an hour of Pilates.

Happy New Year

First of all, a happy new year to all of you.

As you may have noticed, I have been absent for most of December, but I am finally back in Europe now and my first new year's resolution will be to post more regularly.

I am willing to bet that the majority of new year's resolution are sonehow related to weight and / or fitness, so I asked a couple of models last month about their resolutions. Here's a selection:

"I always make a resolution to go to the gym more often but it never happens. So this year my resolution is to hire a personal trainer. We'll see how that goes..."

"I want to eat more regularly and include more fruits and vegetbles in my diet."

"Cutting back on smoking, quitting won't happen anyway, I am not that unrealistic..."

"I want to start going to yoga again...at least twice a week."

Sound like the average housewife's resolution to me...
